Learn: Learn and Grow From Experiences

Strength 12 of the 12 Leadership Strengths
(refer pages 130-135 of Lead with your Strengths)

To Learn and Grow from Experience

Every part of a journey holds new insights and information. Leaders who learn and grow from experience are alert to these moments of learning and draw attention to them. Every action is an occasion for reflection and learning; successes and failures are opportunities to learn, develop and improve.

Leaders who expect others to learn and grow on the journey also need to be willing to learn and be changed, perhaps in quite significant ways.

As the journey unfolds these leaders become aware of inadequacies and gaps, and seek to become better informed and better able to lead in new situations.

These leaders reflect deeply on their experiences, seeking the presence of God in the journey, and are open to personal growth; they hone their sense of purpose, they refine the way they lead.

Developing this strength:

  • model humility and a willingness to learn
  • reflect upon the journey often and create similar opportunities for others
  • seek wisdom in every situation and every person
  • be comfortable with complexity, ambiguity and diversity
  • draw people into prayer about the journey
  • grow enthusiastic curiosity and foster it in others
  • encourage creativity and thinking outside the square
  • develop forums that encourage people to grow together

Learn and grow from experiences - being open to learn and be changed, possibly in quite significant ways.
