Inspire: Inspire Heart Commitment

To Inspire Heart Commitment

Leaders who inspire heart commitment understand that if people are going to move in new directions they have to really want to go there. So they work at connecting people’s passions to the community’s vision. These leaders show the people their stake in the journey and in the destination, and how to best contribute to the endeavour.

Helping individuals and groups move beyond inertia or fear involves more than just understanding a situation. A group starts to move forward as people feel inspired to act, as everyone starts to look towards broader shared possibilities that excite them.

Heart commitment, cannot be bought, demanded or imported. It can only be developed organically, in an atmosphere of trust, open communication, and mutual encouragement.

NCLS research shows that a capacity to inspire others to action is highly significant when it comes to growing healthy churches. Of all the leadership strengths, this one has some of the strongest links with church vitality. It is also significant in creating churches where attenders are open to considering new initiatives.

Developing this strength:

  • inspire commitment to the journey, not the leaders
  • point to Christ
  • build people up, rather than criticising them or their efforts
  • nurture the trust that comes with heart commitment
  • openly accept that failure is sometimes the price of endeavour
  • grow inspiration in the community so that people inspire one another
  • foster love for one another and the wider community
  • encourage people through set-backs, and foster hope
  • promote playfulness and laughter along the way

Inspire heart commitment - by growing ownership of group purpose and excitement about the journey.
